Field Guide to Coral Diseases and Other Causes of Coral Mortality

The guide provides:

  • A field guide to the most common forms of coral disease. It focuses on the Caribbean, the region which is hardest hit by disease outbreaks.
  • Descriptions and photographs of indications of disease. (Photographs can be enlarged by clicking in the first instance and enlarged to their full size by clicking on the symbol that appears in the bottom right hand corner)
  • Identification keys to help you distinguish different diseases from one another
  • Helps differentiate diseases and other causes of damage to corals, such as predation, that may be mistaken for coral diseases.

How you can contribute:

Obtaining records of observations of coral disease is essential to understanding their distribution and tracking their spread. It can also help scientists understand connections between human impacts, such as pollution, and the decline of coral reefs. Reporting your observations would be invaluable to scientists and resource managers.

This CD contains a reporting form that is simple and quick to complete and that you can email so your observations may be added to the Global Database of Coral Diseases.
