Field Guide to Coral Diseases and Other Causes of Coral Mortality

Types of Coral Disease and Their Identification

This section of the guide presents some of the common coral diseases. For each disease an illustrated description of the disease characteristics is given as well as an illustrated list of species the disease is known to afflict.

Each coral must be carefully examined to determine the reason for coral tissue mortality, as disease signs can often resemble other causes.

Types of coral disease include:

  • Black-Band Disease (BBD)
  • White-Band Disease (WBD)
  • White Plague (WP)
  • Yellow-Blotch Disease (YBD)
  • Red-Band Disease (RBD)
  • Patchy Necrosis/White Pox
  • Aspergillosis
  • Skeleton Anomalies
  • Dark-Spots Disease (DSD)
  • Bleaching
