A guide to the Global Coral Disease Database

Data Sources

Data has been made available to the GCDD from a range of sources:

  • published, peer review literature
  • specialists of coral disease - unpublished data (110 coral disease researchers were contacted in the recent revision of the GCDD)
  • specialist coral reef monitoring data
  • unpublished volunteer survey team data
  • email-list servers
  • grey literature
  • personal communications

As all information regarding the observation of coral disease is of value, the database has been structured to allow data entries to be classified according to observer expertise. All data points are referenced to ensure that the data provider can be correctly attributed.

How you can contribute

Obtaining records of observations of coral disease is essential to understanding their distribution and tracking their spread. It can also help scientists understand connections between human impacts, such as pollution, and the decline of coral reefs. Reporting your observations would be invaluable to scientists and resource managers.

If you have data or observations you would like to contribute please contact:

Unfortunately UNEP-WCMC cannot provide copies of papers which are referenced in the Global Coral Database. People wishing to obtain copies should do so through their own library service.
