Welcome to GRAMED

Water covers more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface, but the big question is why is the ocean so important? Not only does the ocean provide us with transportation routes, food, livelihoods, culture and recreation, but critically, the oceans play a crucial role as our thermostat, regulating our atmosphere and climate. How we use and manage the oceans will be a significant test of humankind's ability to steer a sustainable course for our collective future.

More than ever, the impact of human activities and climate change is affecting the state of our marine environment. The formulation of sustainable, ecosystem-based policies and measures for oceans and coasts needs to be supported by sound scientific assessments at national, regional and global scales. The 'Assessment of Assessments' (AoA) established by decision of the United Nations General Assembly represents the first step in this international initiative to improve our understanding of the oceans and to develop a global mechanism for delivering science-based information to decision makers and public. The GRAME Database has been developed as a resource to support the Assessment of Assessments, as well as to those working towards the sustainable use of our oceans.

The GRAMED database contains information on 496 activities at present, including assessments, scientific research studies and data holdings of relevance to the marine and coastal environment at the national, regional and supra-regional scale. It allows the user to search the assessments, download reports of searches, access online full text reports, and where available data sets and other products.

Keeping GRAMED up to date:

This database represents a starting point for gathering together information on data holdings, assessments and other activities that have, or are being undertaken in the marine environment at the national, regional or global scale. It is by no means exhaustive, and we welcome your input. If you would like to inform us of an error or omission, suggest ideas, provide feedback on the site then you can contact us using the online feedback form, or by email gramed@unep-wcmc.org
