Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator

Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator

The Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator is an online, free mapping tool that allows users to define spatial areas of interest and compare a number of different data layers related to ecosystem carbon and biodiversity. In addition to displaying the data layers visually, the Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator estimates the total and average ecosystem carbon stock in a defined area of interest, as well as statistics of several parameters important for biodiversity.

The Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator includes datasets on:

  • Carbon stocks – biomass and soil organic carbon
  • Carbon sequestration potential – based on comparing current estimates of carbon stocks with estimates of maximum carbon stocks for forest types by ecofloristic zone
  • Forest status – intact forest, fragmented/managed forest, partially deforested areas and deforested areas
  • Protected areas
  • Biodiversity Priorities - Key Biodiversity Areas and national biodiversity priority areas ‐ based on ecological gap analyses of countries’ protected area networks
  • Restoration potential – wider landscapes where forest restoration opportunities are more likely to be found.

The Carbon and Biodiversity Calculator is designed to help link the biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation agendas under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The tool can help to answer a number of questions that are relevant to the CBD Aichi Targets, for example:
