With
the support of the UK Government's Darwin
Initiative for the Survival of Species, UNEP-WCMC assisted the
seven countries of Central America to assess their implementation
of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The seven countries involved
are Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua
and Panama.
The primary
aim of the project was to provide the tools and training that will
enable CBD National Focal Points in each country:
- to identify
progress in implementing the convention in a standard way
- to assess
the extent to which National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans
address the full range of obligations
- to identify
limiting factors and what additional support is required.
Participatory
training was provided for local staff from the seven countries
in the use of a standard methodology for the assessment of implementation
of the Convention.
The project
was coordinated by the UNEP-WCMC, working in close collaboration
with the Central American Commission for Environment and Development
(CCAD) and the IUCN Regional Office for Central America (ORMA).
