BINU and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

The BINU project is designed to support the development of the CBD work programme on biodiversity indicators. The Conference of the Parties of the CBD has repeatedly emphasised the importance of developing national biodiversity indicators and building capacity for their further development and use and has called for international collaboration on these issues.

Papers and decisions of the CBD relevant to biodiversity indicators can be found at:

The Project Steering Committee includes a representative of the CBD Secretariat and the results of the project will be presented at the following CBD meetings:

SBSTTA 9 - November 2003
COP 7 - February 2004
SBSTTA 10 - February 2005

Project participants UNEP-WCMC, RIVM, KWS and ULRMC participated in the Expert meeting on indicators of biological diversity, including indicators for rapid assessment of inland water ecosystems, in February 2003.
