Collaborative Partnerships

Collaborate with UNEP-WCMC
Demand is growing for environmental information to be quickly and easily delivered via the Internet. UNEP-WCMC aims to improve the exchange of information on a global scale by working in partnership with other international organisations.

UNEP-WCMC/IHS Energy Agreement (posted 9 June 2005)

This will provide a biodiversity information module to decision makers in the oil and gas sector, to facilitate industry efforts in biodiversity protection. Early access to this information will enable companies to address potential impacts on wildlife and their habitats before any operations begin.

This agreement contributes to other biodiversity data enhancement activities undertaken by the Centre. UNEP-WCMC and conservation partners will continue to make data freely available for non-commercial conservation purposes.

Biodiversity Trends & Threats in Europe (posted 25 Aug 2004)

Indicators are needed to evaluate progress towards the global and regional 2010 biodiversity targets. The pilot project, Biodiversity Trends & Threats in Europe, developed and tested one such indicator, a species trend indicator, for Pan-Europe. The project was coordinated by the UNEP World Conservation and Monitoring Centre, in collaboration with the Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency (RIVM). The project also closely collaborated with the European Topic Centre on Nature Protection and Biodiversity in Paris and the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen.
UNEP-WCMC earthdive Partnership (posted 27 July 2004)

* UNEP-WCMC is working in partnership with earthdive to promote the conservation of marine biodiversity. Marine habitat loss continues at an unprecedented rate. This partnership will enable to monitor on a global level the anthropogenic impacts faced by a host of marine habitats. UNEP-WCMC has linked its unique interactive mapping service (IMapS) to the earthdive website to enable divers to record their observations of the marine world and share them with other divers and the scientific community.

BUILDING CAPACITY FOR BIODIVERSITY MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT IN NEPAL (BCBMAN) (posted 28 July 2004)

*This project aims to build the capacity of protected areas managers in Nepal to incorporate biodiversity information in their decision-making processes through the provision of tools for biodiversity assessment and monitoring, supported by training both in the UK and Nepal. The results of the research will also enable the effectiveness of current protected area management to be assessed, regarding benefits both to the conservation of biodiversity and the livelihoods of local people. The project is implemented by UNEP-WCMC and the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (KMTNC) and is funded by the U.K. Government's Darwin Initiative.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION, RESTORATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE IN FRAGMENTED FOREST LANDSCAPES (BIOCORES)

Nine institutions from Latin America and Europe are working together through BIOCORES to analyse different aspects of the impact of forest fragmentation on biodiversity, and methods of tackling the issue through ecosystem restoration. The project is working in four areas in Mexico and Chile, and has an emphasis on developing practical techniques for analysis, decision support and forest restoration. Our analysis will enable the impact of different land use options on biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration to be evaluated. This project is being carried out under the ICA4-CT-2001-10095 contract, in the INCO programme of the EC.

BIODIVERSITY INDICATORS FOR NATIONAL USE (BINU)

The BINU project will develop biodiversity indicators to support planning and decision-making at the national-level in Ecuador, Kenya, Philippines and Ukraine. The results will also be disseminated to strengthen the capacities of other countries and the development of indicators under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

THE BIODIVERSITY AYSÉN PROJECT

The Biodiversity Aysén Project is developing the capacity of the Chilean protected areas authority (CONAF) to sustainably manage protected areas in the southern Chilean region of Aysén. It is implemented by Raleigh International and CONAF, in collaboration with the natural history museums of London and Santiago and technical assistance from UNEP-WCMC.

EARTHWATCH INSTITUTE

The collaboration with Earthwatch is:

  • providing a forum where Earthwatch project field results will be linked directly to the relevant UNEP-WCMC databases that are globally accessible;
  • providing up-to-date information from the field to UNEP-WCMC helping them achieve their aim of improving the quality and integrity of the global and regional datasets of their Biodiversity Information System (BIS).

PROJECT PROTEUS

Proteus is a project aimed at developing an electronic Biodiversity Information Service that will provide accessible, relevant and reliable biodiversity information for practitioners and decision-makers. It is a multi-stakeholder project sponsored jointly by partners in the private and public sector. Major sponsors include UNEP and five private sector companies. In addition there are three technical partners that are providing in-kind contributions of information technology, and several private sector and NGO collaborators.
