Harmonization of National Reporting

Harmonized Reporting

Each international agreement places a certain number of requirements on contracting parties. These include the requirement to periodically submit national reports and other information. As a country may be party to a wide range of international agreements, it could be required to submit a significant amount of information. This can be quite a burden, particularly if the various reporting processes are not well coordinated at the national level.

Meanwhile there is only limited collaboration between the secretariats of the international agreements to harmonise and streamline their approaches to the collection, management and use of information. This is recognised, and efforts are underway to improve the situation.

UNEP has been working with a range of countries and convention secretariats to review and test different ways of achieving increased harmonization and streamlining. This website provides information on these approaches and links to other relevant websites.

Latest Updates

  • On 21 May 2008, at the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UNEP-WCMC held a side event with the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts on harmonization of reporting. Australia presented a project on harmonization of reporting to the biodiversity-related conventions in Pacific Island Countries, in collaboration with the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), while UNEP-WCMC reported on their latest work on harmonization. Statements were made by representatives of the secretariats of CBD, Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
  • From 2006-2008, UNEP-WCMC worked with the UNEP Division of Environmental Law and Conventions and the secretariats of six biodiversity-related conventions and agreements on a project on Knowledge Management. This work included the preparation of studies on joint core reporting elements for biodiversity-related agreements, on joint reporting for the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and two of its agreements, on drylands for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and on inland waters for CBD and the Ramsar Convention.
