Projects on Approaches to Harmonizing Reporting

UNEP-WCMC with UNEP Division of Environmental Law and Conventions, in collaboration with the secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, African – Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and Indian Ocean South-East Asian Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding (IOSEA), has implemented from 2006-2008 a project on Knowledge Management. As part of this project, new suggestions for simplified reporting procedures for biodiversity-related agreements were identified. A number of reports were produced:

  • Joint core reporting elements of biodiversity-related conventions and agreements. Main Report | Annex
  • Joint reporting for CMS, AEWA and IOSEA. Main Report | Annex
  • Joint reporting on drylands for CBD and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Main Report | Annex
  • A joint reporting framework for inland waters for CBD and Ramsar. Main Report | Annex

UNEP Pilot Projects

In October 2000, UNEP convened a workshop ?Towards the harmonization of national reporting? where representatives of eight convention and agreement secretariats, eight countries and several international organizations met in Cambridge, UK to discuss options for harmonization of reporting. The workshop resulted in the establishment of UNEP-sponsored pilot projects in four countries to explore different approaches to harmonization of national reporting to biodiversity-related conventions.
