The seagrass dataset has been compiled by UNEP-WCMC in collaboration with Dr Frederick T. Short, University of New Hampshire, USA to show the global distribution of seagrass species. This dataset has been created from multiple sources and was used in the creation of the "World Atlas of Seagrasses" (2003). This polygon feature dataset is an update of the data used in the Atlas and is a unique data holding about the state of the world's seagrasses. For a complete overview of global seagrass distribution this dataset should be displayed together with the associated point dataset.

This dataset shows the distribution of mangroves for the coast of East Africa. This is an update to the 1997 Mangrove layer, updated by UNEP-WCMC for the publication Taylor, M., Ravilious, C. and Green, E.P. (2003) "Mangroves of East Africa" UNEP-WCMC Biodiversity Series No. 13. Banson, Cambridge.

This global dataset shows the distribution of mangroves and was compiled by UNEP-WCMC in collaboration with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME). These data were published in: Spalding, M.D., Blasco, F. and Field, C.D. (Eds). 1997. "World Mangrove Atlas". The International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems, Okinawa, Japan. 178 pp.

This regional dataset shows the distribution of mangroves and was compiled by UNEP-WCMC through processing of Landsat TM 5 and Landsat 7 ETM+ images dating predominantly from 1999-2001. These data were published in association with the UNEP-Regional Seas Programme in the report: "Mangroves of Western and Central Africa" written and compiled by Emily Corcoran, Corinna Ravilious and Mike Skuja. (June 2007).

This GIS dataset for mangrove distributions was produced for the publication, World Atlas of Mangroves (2010) as joint initiatives of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization-Man and Biosphere (UNESCO-MAB), United Nations University-Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Major funding was provided by ITTO through a Japanese Government project grant and the project was implemented by ISME.

In 2008, the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted scientific criteria for identifying ecologically or biologically significant marine areas in need of protection on the open oceans and deep seas.
While much scientific discovery lies ahead, available information and current and emerging methodologies already allow us to begin identifying oceanic features that are likely of particular ecological or biological importance.
This report presents comprehensive and up-to-date information and data on marine cold-water coral reefs from around the world. Cold Water Coral Reefs: Out of Sight - No Longer Out of Mind aims to provide policy makers with the information required to take concerted action in the conservation, protection and sustainable management of these beautiful, largely unexplored and fragile coral reefs.

This dataset shows the global distribution of cold-water coral reefs. Data was compiled and imported into GIS format by UNEP-WCMC sourced from A. Freiwald, Alex Rogers and Jason Hall-Spencer, and other contributors. Full source information is provided within the attributes for each record within the database. Points on the map indicate observed reefs of varying size and stages of development, but not the actual area covered. The high density of reefs shown in the North Atlantic most probably reflects the intensity of research in this region. Further discoveries are expected worldwide, particularly in the deeper waters of subtropical and tropical regions
Resource Type: Spatial Data / MapsThe World's oceans play a crucial role for life on the planet. Healthy seas and the services they provide are key to the future development of mankind. Our seas are highly dynamic, structured and complex systems. The seafloor consists of vast shelves and plains with huge mountains, canyons and trenches which dwarf similar structures on land. Ocean currents transport water masses many times larger than all rivers on Earth combined.
In this report, the locations of the most productive fishing grounds in the World - from shallow, coastal waters to the deep and high seas - are compared to projected scenarios of climate change, ocean acidification, coral bleaching, intensity of fisheries, land-based pollution, increase of invasive species infestations and growth in coastal development.
