This dataset shows the distribution of mangroves for the coast of East Africa. This is an update to the 1997 Mangrove layer, updated by UNEP-WCMC for the publication Taylor, M., Ravilious, C. and Green, E.P. (2003) "Mangroves of East Africa" UNEP-WCMC Biodiversity Series No. 13. Banson, Cambridge.

This global dataset shows the distribution of mangroves and was compiled by UNEP-WCMC in collaboration with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME). These data were published in: Spalding, M.D., Blasco, F. and Field, C.D. (Eds). 1997. "World Mangrove Atlas". The International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems, Okinawa, Japan. 178 pp.

This regional dataset shows the distribution of mangroves and was compiled by UNEP-WCMC through processing of Landsat TM 5 and Landsat 7 ETM+ images dating predominantly from 1999-2001. These data were published in association with the UNEP-Regional Seas Programme in the report: "Mangroves of Western and Central Africa" written and compiled by Emily Corcoran, Corinna Ravilious and Mike Skuja. (June 2007).
Resource Type: Spatial Data / MapsThis JNCC-commissioned report highlights biodiversity impacts of indirect land use change caused by biofuel production. Increased demand for biofuels to achieve renewable energy targets is putting pressure on biodiversity worldwide. The research highlights a new and so far little understood threat: the impact of indirect land use change on biodiversity.

This dataset was created show the original habitat types as they were before man's influence in the Indo-Malayan realm; change over time can be seen when used alongside the remaining natural habitats dataset. These datasets were produced alongside the publication "Protected Areas Systems Review of the Indo-Malayan Realm, Mackinnon, J. ed. 1997" in collaboration with The Asian Bureau for Conservation (ABC). This was produced to document the growth and changing character of the protected areas systems of the region over the ten year period 1986-1996. This was in the hope of aiding conservationists and development practioners to conserve Asia's rich biological resources upon which so many depend.
Resource Type: Spatial Data / MapsThis database was created and is maintained by UNEP-WCMC with financial support from the European Commission and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee of the United Kingdom.
It contains nomenclatural, distribution and legal data on CITES-listed species.
This information resource is a result of long-term collaboration between countless individual scientists worldwide and many organizations whose contribution is gratefully acknowledged.

This GIS dataset for mangrove distributions was produced for the publication, World Atlas of Mangroves (2010) as joint initiatives of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization-Man and Biosphere (UNESCO-MAB), United Nations University-Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Major funding was provided by ITTO through a Japanese Government project grant and the project was implemented by ISME.

The Critical Site Network (CSN) Tool is a new online resource for the conservation of 294 species of waterbirds and the important sites upon which they depend in Africa and Western Eurasia. Leading global conservation organisations working for the protection of waterbirds and their habitats have joined forces to develop this tool, strengthening the implementation of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Resource Type: Tools / ApplicationsThe CITES Trade Database, managed by UNEP-WCMC on behalf of the CITES Secretariat, is a unique resource that holds over 11 million records of trade in wildlife and over 50,000 scientific names of taxa listed by CITES. Contracting Parties provide annual reports to the CITES Secretariat including full details of all export and import permits and certificates issued during the previous year. More than 850,000 records of trade in CITES-listed species of wildlife are reported annually.
Resource Type: Tools / ApplicationsThe CITES Trade Data Dashboards are a new, interactive and dynamic way of viewing the trade data submitted by CITES Parties in their annual reports to the Convention. The Global dashboard displays global trade trends (e.g. global trade in live reptiles), whereas the National dashboard shows information by country. The dashboards have been developed by UNEP-WCMC on behalf of the CITES Secretariat.
