Datasets Available from UNEP-WCMC: Excluding WDPA
Access to UNEP-WCMC datasets is provided on the understanding that you read and consent to be bound by the Terms and Conditions attached. This GIS dataset for mangrove distributions was produced for the publication, World Atlas of Mangroves (2010) as joint initiatives of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization-Man and Biosphere (UNESCO-MAB), United Nations University-Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Major funding was provided by ITTO through a Japanese Government project grant and the project was implemented by ISME.
Resource Type: Spatial Data / Maps
This tool provides interactive maps that allow users to explore the distribution of carbon density relative to areas high in biodiversity and areas which are nationally protected for different countries around the world. Users can view layers, show or hide layer content, as well as see how the distribution of carbon and biodiversity relates to other geographical features such as rivers, coastlines, and international boundaries.

This dataset shows the global distribution of cold-water coral reefs. Data was compiled and imported into GIS format by UNEP-WCMC sourced from A. Freiwald, Alex Rogers and Jason Hall-Spencer, and other contributors. Full source information is provided within the attributes for each record within the database. Points on the map indicate observed reefs of varying size and stages of development, but not the actual area covered. The high density of reefs shown in the North Atlantic most probably reflects the intensity of research in this region. Further discoveries are expected worldwide, particularly in the deeper waters of subtropical and tropical regions
Resource Type: Spatial Data / MapsThis innovative tool provides users with initial estimates of embedded carbon within an identified spatial area such as a protected area or any user-defined polygon drawn on a global map.

Diseases affecting coral reefs have increased in frequency and severity in recent decades. These diseases combine with existing human induced impacts on coral reefs to compromise their health and sustainability. Up to date information on the global abundance and distribution of diseases is critical in order to predict these impacts, to understand how current reef management practices and human impacts affect the spread and severity of diseases, and to inform policy and management decision making.

The Global Marine Turtle Nesting database provides the distribution of
marine turtles. Information was obtained from published and unpublished
literature, and through liaison with turtle fieldworkers. It was intended that
the database would be of use to a wide audience, including biologists,
coastal planners and those concerned with emergency response to oil spills.
The marine turtles database of nesting and feeding sites was developed by
UNEP-WCMC over a number of years and contains source information from
1949 to 1993. This dataset is no longer being maintained and must be used
With caution.

The dataset contained in this map represents the global distribution of warm water coral reefs. It has been created from multiple sources and supercedes the dataset used in the World Atlas of Coral Reefs (2001), although some aspects of this product still originate from that datasource. This global coral reef dataset should be seen an 'interim' global product. It has been compiled from a number of data sources which have been merged together by UNEP-WCMC. The Approximate % coverage of data sources are as follows - Millennium Coral Reefs (Unvalidated) 50% - Millennium Coral Reefs (Validated) 30 % - Other sources 20%.
