Explanatory note for CITES related information

This database provides information on the full Appendix history of the taxa selected. The original listing date is given for the taxa selected (orders, families, genera, species, subspecies, varieties) and populations specifically named in the Appendices, either currently or in earlier versions of the Appendices. All reservations entered by Parties are listed, with the dates on which they entered into force and, in the case of past reservations, the dates on which they were withdrawn.

CITES Appendix

This column gives the Appendix/Appendices in which the taxa are or were listed. Reservations made by Parties are listed by adding '/r' to the Appendix number, to signify the entry into force, and '/w' to signify the withdrawal of the reservation. If both Appendix I and Appendix II are applicable to a particular taxon on one date, Appendix I takes precedence in the list. 'Del' in one of the three columns, instead of an Appendix number, indicates that the taxon was deleted from that Appendix on the given date.

A two-letter ISO country or territory code is given where a listing refers to a geographically separate population.

Date listed

The next column contains the dates when changes to the listing of taxa or reservations on the Appendices came into effect. The dates are listed chronologically, with the earliest date first. The subsequent listing history of the taxon/population can be determined by examining the following lines. Where populations of a taxon are split between Appendix I and Appendix II, both Appendices are listed against every date when a change has taken place, with relevant notes on distribution.

Notes

The final column contains notes that summarize the changes and status after each change has taken place. Where separate populations are involved the history is provided in a cumulative manner, so that any changes to the listings between the various Appendices can be tracked by reading the two lines that refer to each change. References to geographically distinct populations are indicated by the use of two-letter ISO codes. Other notes provide further information about the listed taxa, e.g. scientific synonyms.

Example

NB: The list is in reverse chronological order, i.e. first entry at the bottom and most recent at the top.

The listing history of the population of Zimbabwe (ZW) of Crocodylus niloticus:

• The first (i.e. bottom) entry shows that the species (i.e. all populations) was listed in Appendix I on 1 July 1975.
• Above this is a number of entries refer to the transfer of various populations between Appendix I and Appendix II. One of these indicates that ranched populations from Zimbabwe were transferred to Appendix II on 29 July 1983.
• Further entries confirm that ranched populations of Zimbabwe remained on Appendix II
  
• The final (i.e. top) entry summarizes the current situation for the species, confirming that the ranched population of Zimbabwe is still on Appendix II.
