UNEP-WCMC's data holdings on forests, their diversity and conservation status worldwide come from a variety of national and international sources. The spatial data have formed the basis for a major statistical analysis of forest protection in the world, carried out in conjunction with CIFOR. UNEP-WCMC is working with IUFRO and other forest information organisations (e.g. FAO, WFI, EFI, CIFOR) towards the development of a more comprehensive Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) which will be available on the Web.
