Brazilian Oil Spill in Guanabara Bay, Brazil

26 July 2000

A spill of oil in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janiero, Brazil was seen near Sugar Loaf Mountain on the morning of 25 July 2000. Initial response to the slick is that it "looked smaller" than the July 16 spill. The Guanabara Bay has important mangrove and marine ecosystems which may be at risk from this oil spill.

In January a Brazilian tanker dumped 270,000 gallons (1.3 million litres) in Guanabara Bay, coating countless marine birds, fish and crabs in oil.
