Protected Planet (protectedplanet.net) is a new initiative to showcase the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) that engages the public in conserving biodiversity and boosts global interest in protected areas. Protected Planet is designed to improve the quality of protected areas information and make it available to the world with just the click of a mouse. Building on the ‘citizen science’ approach, it brings together species data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), articles from Wikipedia, photos from Panoramio, and Google mapping technology.
The Critical Site Network (CSN) Tool is a new online resource for the conservation of 294 species of waterbirds and the important sites upon which they depend in Africa and Western Eurasia.
The Global Coral Disease Database (coraldisease.org/) has resulted from a collaboration between UNEP-WCMC and NOAA NMFS. The project aims to collate information on the global distribution of coral diseases to contribute to the understanding of coral disease prevalence.
Diseases affecting coral reefs have increased in frequency and severity in recent decades. These diseases combine with existing human induced impacts on coral reefs to compromise their health and sustainability. Up to date information on the global abundance and distribution of diseases is critical in order to predict these impacts, to understand how current reef management practices and human impacts affect the spread and severity of diseases, and to inform policy and management decision making.
