Mari joined the centre in 2010 and her work is mainly related to supporting species-related MEAs, including CITES, CMS and EU Wildlife Trade regulations. She is particularly interested in timber and forest-related issues, and for her PhD, she studied the impacts of FSC forest certification in Honduran community forests. For her MSc in Environmental Biology, Mari interviewed Ghanaian farmers about the benefits of farmland trees, and studied the use of epiphytes as indicators of disturbance. She has taught courses at the University of Helsinki, and done voluntary work for a Zambian environmental NGO. Mari is from Finland and her favourite place in the world is a little island by the Baltic Sea, where she can sail, swim and enjoy a sauna.
