We provide strategic scientific information to guide decisions impacting on the marine and coastal environment. We achieve this by facilitating the collaborative creation and improvement of critical marine and coastal datasets, and enabling their use in relevant environmental and socio-economic assessments and tools.
Priority areas of work
Our work priorities are organised into three broad sequential categories, such that the outputs of the first support the activities in the second, and so on. These priority areas have been identified with the intention of collaborating with UNEP MCEB and other partners in implementing the UNEP Marine and Coastal Strategy, and supporting ongoing activities of biodiversity and related conventions.
Reliable data underpin critical environmental assessments, and the robustness of resultant policies and decisions. There is an urgent need to improve the extent and resolution of spatial datasets for critical marine and coastal biodiversity and ecosystem services. The MADS Programme aims to be a trusted partner and facilitator for the compilation, creation, ongoing improvement, and dissemination of critical marine and coastal datasets that are global in extent and have local relevance.More
Scientifically sound analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of data, is a critical step to better policy- and decision-making. The MADS Programme will provide technical capacity and support to ensure the appropriate application and integration of critical datasets into decision-making processes and tools. MADS will continue to build technical capacity to support the appropriate use of new decision support techniques and interpret their outputs as they come available.More
The implementation of policies that are responsive to the impacts of a changing environmental and social context at a local level requires the strengthening of adaptive capacity within communities. The MADS Programme will build on existing partnerships to provide relevant scientific information and advice to support the integration of environmental and development objectives, including adaptation to the impacts of environmental and socio- change.More
