Notes:
- In contrast to many conservation stories, lessons are being learned about protected areas which carry a simple message:
-
Protecting coral reefs is a critical element of economic and social planning.
- There are now countless examples of coral reef protection leading to increases in fish yields.
-
- Initiatives led by governments, NGOs and local communities have been developed, closing off certain small areas to all fishing. Examples from Philippines, south Pacific, Belize, St Lucia. Over a period of 5-10 years the fish-stocks in these areas flourish and export large numbers of fish to the surroundings, greatly increasing overall yields.
-
- Such protected areas are also increasingly forming a focus point for tourist activities, generating income and employment for local communities.
