Notes:
- There is considerable concern about the longer term impacts of climate change
-
- Coral organisms have survived for some 200 million years, and are unlikely to disappear completely. Coral reefs, by contrast, are complex structures which have been built up by the dense-packed growth of thousands of corals. Coral reefs have not always occurred in abundance world-wide - and may well disappear totally
-
- We have no clear picture as to how quickly corals can adapt to changes in temperature.
-
- An integral part of the recovery process is the re-stocking of reefs with new corals from other areas. By protecting networks of coral reefs over wide areas it is more likely that new coral larvae will be available as and when reefs bleach again.
