The following shuttle images have been provided for free one-off use by the press for any articles which cover the World Atlas of Coral Reefs.

The following images were taken by space shuttle astronauts and have been used, along with many others, to illustrate the Atlas. Any use must be acknowledged to the Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Laboratory, NASA, Johnson Space Center.

Caicos Island
The Caicos Bank is the larger part of the British Overseas Territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands, south-east of the Bahamas. It is a wide shallow bank edged with beautiful coral reefs. The tail of the Space Shuttle can be seen in this photograph.

Diego Garcia, BIOT
The coral atoll of Diego Garcia is just a small part of the British Indian Ocean Territory or Chagos Archipelago. This Overseas Territory of the UK includes a vast area of reefs in the central Indian Ocean, making the UK one of te world's major coral reef nations. Small

Florida USA
In this wide-angle photograph the coral reefs of Florida can clearly be seen in the foreground, with some of the shallow banks and reefs of the Bahamas out to the east (right). Small

Long Island, Bahamas
The Bahamas consist of a vast area of shallow banks, many fringed by coral reefs. Large areas remain poorly known to scientists. Low resolution tif 159 bytes

Sinai Peninsula
The Red Sea has the best developed coral reefs in close proximity to Europe. Some of these have been severely degraded by poorly planned tourism development, but in other places, such as the national parks of the Sinai Peninsula they are now being actively managed and offer fabulous diving.
