World
Atlas of Coral Reefs - Updates
Every effort has been made to ensure consistency throughout
this book, however in any compendium of this size there are likely to
be oversights. The following is a list of known errors or omissions from
the first edition.
For those corrections already incorporated into a new
print-run we have provided fully corrected versions of the entire pages.
These can be printed out and incorporated into your copy of the book.
The following corrections have all been incorporated
into the second print-run (January 2002).
Costa Rica (p. 126)
It has become apparent that our source material greatly exaggerated the
reef area on the Pacific coast. Until we can find a better source we have
simply removed reefs from this coastline, but have not re-calculated reef
area statistics. A larger revision will have to wait for a new edition.
Seychelles (p. 201-202)
On the maps a number of proposed protected areas were incorrectly marked
on the maps, which has not been done elsewhere. These have been removed
on the new maps. Map 7f. Map7g.
Malaysia (p. 270-271)
The sizes of the protected areas were incorrectly entered. With the exception
of Pulau Penyu (Turtle Islands) and Pulau Perhentian Besar the areas cited
should all be increase 100-fold. We have taken the opportunity to add
the Turtle Islands Heritage Protected area to the sites for this country.
Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia (p. 359)
Some of the reef area from Palau was wrongly assigned to FSM. The reef
area for Palau should read 1150 km2 and for FSM should read 4340 km2.
The following have been noted and will be incorporated into subsequent
print-runs and new editions:
Solomon Islands (p. 346)
The following paper, which was the major source of information for this
chapter, was inadvertently omitted from the bibliography. We offer our
apologies to the authors for this oversight:
Sulu R, Hay C, Ramohia P, Lam M (2000). The Coral Reefs of the Solomon
Islands. In: Salvat B, South R, Wilkinson C (eds.). Proceedings of the
International Coral Reefs Initiative Regional Symposium, Noumea, 22-24
May 2000.
This paper has subsequently been formally published (2002) by the Australian
Institute of Marine Science.
There will of course continue to be major changes to the status and management
of coral reefs. We will not log these changes on this page, but such changes
will be incorporated into future editions of the Atlas. For up-to-date
information on coral reefs and their management, including protected areas
information we would encourage you to visit other pages of the UNEP-WCMC
web-site; the ReefBase web-site on www.reefbase.org; and the World Resources
Institute web-site on www.wri.org
