UNEP-WCMC maintains a large amount of information relating to marine and coastal
environments and their conservation. Increasingly, this information is managed
using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Particular attention is devoted to
mapping sensitive coastal ecosystems, in preparation for emergency
response and contingency planning activities.

The UNEP Coral Reef Unit, ICRI, ICRAN and UNEP-WCMC's
Marine and Coastal programme are working together in Cambridge
to create a mass of resources and initiatives to address coral
reef issues around the world.

Since July 2003, UNEP-WCMC's marine programme has provided technical
and administrative support to the UK and Seychelles goverments as
co-hosts of the International Coral Reef Initiative.
