Since April 2000, UNEP-WCMC and the
Marine Aquarium Council (MAC),
in collaboration with other trade associations, have
established a Global Marine Aquarium Database (GMAD) as a freely available
source of information on the global aquarium industry. The marine aquarium
trade has been the subject of much attention due to accounts of destructive
collective practices, the introduction of alien species, over-exploitation
and the threat of target species.

UNEP-WCMC has developed the Marine Mammals Database
in response to a pressing need to bring together existing information and facilitate
a global view on the conservation of marine mammals worldwide. This facility
allows information providers to retain ownershp and management of their own
data. This database will provide the basis for the recently commenced production
of the World Atlas
of Marine Mammals.

The result of a collaboration between UNEP-WCMC and NOOA NMFS, the Coral
Disease Database records instances of coral disease worldwide taken from
scientific literature and is updated on a monthly basis. The project
aims to expand this database to incorporate unpublished records of coral
disease.

UNEP-WCMC maintains information on species of conservation importance,
including data on over 200,000 animals, plants, sub-species, stocks and
synonyms. Sub-sets of data from the Species Database have been tailored to different user
needs and can be interrogated on the web, providing differing views of
the central database.
