In the area south and west of Xalapa, Veracruz, the University of Veracruz has developed a research program to test the performance of native tree species on sites with differing patterns and causes of degradation. The specific aims for the project were:
1) Determine plant survival and growth in height and diameter of four native tree species used in mixed
experimental plantations at three sites;
2) Predict the future performance of the experimental plantations by comparing them with older
plantations started by local stakeholders;
3) Evaluate the success of different species in sites that differ in their degree of perturbation.
