Climate Change Mitigation: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

To mitigate (limit) climate change it is necessary to limit the increase in concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. This involves reducing emissions of GHGs and increasing removals from the atmosphere through carbon sequestration. Ecosystems and their biodiversity have important roles to play in securing the substantial carbon stocks held within the earth’s ecosystems; continuing to sequester further carbon; and providing a stable store under changing conditions. Informed decision-making and careful management of natural ecosystems for mitigation can both enhance this role and help to avoid potential negative impacts of other activities.

UNEP-WCMC’s work in this area has focused especially on the implications for biodiversity of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) in developing countries, including through support to the UN-REDD Programme and through spatial analyses of carbon and potential co-benefits (biodiversity and ecosystem services). We have also addressed bioenergy production and ways of ensuring its sustainability, especially in relation to biodiversity.

UN-REDD Programme

As part of the UN-REDD Programme, UNEP-WCMC is working with developing countries on tools and analyses that help decision makers to safeguard and enhance the multiple benefits of REDD+. We produce analyses and guidance on this topic, including spatial analyses of areas of overlap between carbon, biodiversity and other ecosystem services. Substantial work has also been carried out on the measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) requirements for REDD/REDD+.

Carbon and Biodiversity Mapping

UNEP-WCMC supports countries to address co-benefits in planning and implementing climate change mitigation measures, including REDD+. Our support is adapted to the countries' needs and priorities, and includes developing maps on the distribution of carbon in relation to protected areas, biodiversity, and other ecosystem services, as well as other guidance and tools. Some of this work also supports national efforts to prepare for REDD under the UN-REDD Programme.

Voluntary REDD+ Database (VRD)

Voluntary REDD+ Database (VRD)

The Voluntary REDD+ Database (VRD) on financing, actions and results was formally launched at the Ministerial Meeting of theREDD+ Partnership in October 2010. The online, publicly accessible Database stores information on REDD+ financing voluntarily submitted by Partner countries and stakeholder institutions. In doing so, it aims to improve transparency around REDD+ and support efforts to identify and analyse gaps and overlaps in REDD+ financing. The VRD is one of the main ongoing activities of the REDD+ Partnership, and a key provider of information to the global community on REDD+ financing. Visitors to the site can view summary graphs, statistics and maps on REDD+ financing, as well as search more detailed information on individual REDD+ financing agreements between countries and/or institutions.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy

UNEP-WCMC is working on a number of issues related to bioenergy, including its (potential) impacts on biodiversity and questions surrounding sustainability. Specifically, UNEP-WCMC provides technical support to the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) in the development of sustainability criteria and indicators for bioenergy production, and has reviewed the impacts of biofuels on biodiversity.

Forest restoration

Forest restoration

UNEP-WCMC has been involved in several projects on forest restoration. Notably, a Forest Restoration Information System was developed to facilitate exchange of knowledge and experience among forest restoration projects and facilitate the prioritisation, design and execution of forest restoration efforts. Currently, work on forest restoration mainly occurs through collaborations with countries under the UN-REDD Programme.
