2014 UNEP-WCMC Annual Report

The 2014 UNEP-WCMC Annual Report highlights our continued commitment to place biodiversity at the heart of decision-making.

Our ability to do this is strengthened by the collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme and WCMC, the UK charity. In 2014, a review of UNEP-WCMC’s performance was undertaken, which concluded that UNEP-WCMC is a centre of excellence and an important and highly valued resource to UNEP, the biodiversity-related multilateral environmental agreements, and the international community more widely. More details of the review can be read in the Annual Report.

Examples of our contributions to the biodiversity-related multilateral environmental agreements are featured in the 2014 Annual Report, such as our assessment of progress towards the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. This work contributed to a global biodiversity review that informed decisions made at the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

We strive to provide salient, credible and legitimate information to our project partners and in 2014 we built upon the considerable body of work in the fields of natural capital accounting and ecosystems mapping by producing a report for UNEP that featured the first composite map of the world’s ecosystem assets, both marine and terrestrial. We also launched the 2014 Protected Planet Report that recommends priority actions for meeting Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, which aims to increase current levels of protected area coverage and ensure they are effectively and equitably managed.
