Counting the cost of global biodiversity

A new paper Assessing the cost of global biodiversity and conservation knowledge was published in PLOS ONE (16 August) describes work led by Diego Juffe-Bignoli, Programme Officer, Protected Areas Programme on the sustainable long-term financing of biodiversity datasets.

The paper assesses, for the first time, the costs of compiling data into four important biodiversity and conservation knowledge products and the resources needed to maintain their processes, databases and derived information through online platforms. These vital data and their support systems are essential to enable scientists and policy makers worldwide to place biodiversity at the heart of environment and development decision-making.
