UNEP-WCMC Report on Achievements for the year 2015

The 2015 UNEP-WCMC Annual Report illustrates how the Centre continues to deliver the highest quality information and knowledge to enable decision-makers to put biodiversity at the heart of decision-making. Amongst other achievements, during the year the Centre delivered enhanced support for UNEP’s strategic presence in China and Brazil and supported new efforts to strengthen economic understanding of the environment. 2015 saw the adoption by the international community of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The Centre has identified various indicators of progress towards these goals and is developing new indicators, such as the Wetlands Extent Trends Index. Vital global datasets, including the World Database on Protected Areas underpin such indicators and continue to be used widely by scientists, businesses, governments and others to inform planning, policy development and management.

In a collaborative project with development organisations, the Centre also supported countries in Africa to integrate biodiversity and development considerations into national planning. Further afield, the Centre developed innovative modelling and scenario planning linking biodiversity, climate and agriculture for decision makers.

The Proteus Partnership was renewed in 2015 and is the only global collaboration between the conservation community and the extractives sector that provides access to global biodiversity information and tools in the context of company biodiversity management practices. The Centre’s scientists have also seized the opportunities presented by mobile and web technologies to improve the flow of biodiversity data giving decision-makers timely access to information and intuitive tools to analyse it.

The Centre also intensified its important work at global and national levels to promote increased collaboration and co-operation in the implementation of international agreements. Full details of how UNEP-WCMC puts biodiversity at the heart of decision-making. Read more about the UNEP-WCMC here.
