Pelagic Provinces of the World are a set of biogeographic regions for the off-shelf epipelagic waters of the world, broadly aligned with the Marine Ecoregions of the World (MEOW, Spalding et al. 2007 in Bioscience) system, and non-overlapping. It is hoped that this dataset will provide a valuable tool in supporting threat analysis, priority setting, policy development and active management of the world’s pelagic oceans.

NOTE: The dataset has been left in its original condition in which the polygons will extend onto the 0-200 m depth zone (continental shelf areas) and also land masses. For display and orientation purposes here, land masses and the 0-200 m depth zone have been removed from the Pelagic Provinces dataset. Individual provinces are labelled, while the colours represent the different biomes.
