UNEP-WCMC Earthdive Partnership

Introduction | Press Release

UNEP-WCMC is working in partnership with earthdive to increase awareness of the importance of conserving our marine biodiversity for the future. Never before has marine habitat loss occurred on the scale seen today. This partnership aims to halt this terrible global phenomenon by mobilising those that care about our marine and coastal ecosystems.

The Centre has provided significant technical and scientific contributions to enable the development of the earthdive Global Dive Log. By employing UNEP-WCMC's interactive map service (IMapS), earthdive is providing divers around the globe with access to global marine biodiversity databases. The mapping service allows divers to identify locations of scientific interest and record their observations, bringing their diving experiences to the attention of other divers and the scientific community.

The UNEP-WCMC earthdive partnership will enable us to monitor the anthropogenic impacts faced by a host of marine habitats on a global level. Each science log is therefore vital and together will create a Global Snapshot of the world's oceans that can be used by decision makers at every level.
