Geographical Location Southeast region, in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo on the Atlantic coast, 22°40'-23°22'S, 44°25'-44°57'W.
Date and History of Establishment 4 February 1971, by Federal Decree 68,172 with alterations by Decree 70,694 (8 June 1972).
Area 100,000 ha, though this was not effective in 1972. 140,000 ha were planned in the original act.
Land Tenure About one quarter (23,500 ha) IBDF owned, the rest in private ownership in about 400 plots of varying size.

Physical Features Includes an offshore island, a small bay and sandy and rock beaches along the coast, the deeply cut valleys leading up to the Serra da Bocaina plateau, with plains above 1800m which are noted for the granitic batholiths and rounded gneiss blocks exposed on the surface.

Vegetation Tropical Atlantic rainforest up to about 1800m, then upland forests and gallery forests dominated by Araucaria angustifolia and Podocarpus spp. merge into the plateau grasslands ( known as 'Campos de altitude').
Fauna The fauna is typical of the Atlantic coastal forest and includes woolly spider monkey Brachyteles arachnoides (E), buffy-tufted-ear marmoset Callithrix aurita (E), brown howler monkey Alouatta fusca (I), American tapir Tapirus terrestris, capybara Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, jaguar Panthera onca (V), vinaceous-breasted parrot Amazona vinacea, solitary tinamou Tinamus solitarius, red-capped parrot Pionopsitta pileata, bare-throated bellbird Procnias audicollis, harpy eagle Harpia harpyia (R), black hawk-eagle Spizaetus tyrannus, ornate hawk-eagle S. ornatus, black-fronted piping guan Aburria jacutinga (E), blue-bellied parrot Triclaria malachitacea, tegu Tupinambis teguixin. Jorge Padua et al (1974) also record giant and La Plata otters Pteronura brasiliensis (V) and Lutra platensis (V) and giant anteater Myrmecophaga tridactyla (V).

Management Constraints Considerable hunting took place in the area before the park was established. There are land tenure problems, and the area has been highly modified in parts in the past. Some poaching and illegal cutting. IBDF has alotted a substantial block of funds for land purchase and management in 1982.

1982; WWF Tropical Forest Campaign grant of US$ 3,000 to help combat poaching through the provision of essential equipment, such as cameras (to document illegal encroachment), tents and binoculars.
