Physical Features This is the largest single protected area in the Atlantic forest region. The forest is mostly undisturbed, and provides a refuge for many rapidly-disappearing species of plants and animals.

Vegetation The reserve is mostly covered with Atlantic rainforest, and is an important source of seed stock for reforestation projects. Trees include the palmito palm Euterpe sp.
Fauna Wildlife is rich. Mammals include jaguar Panthera onca (V), ocelot Felis pardalis (V), puma F. concolor, otter, tapir Tapirus sp., collared and white-lipped peccary Tayassu tajacu and T. peccari, tufted capuchin Cebus apella nigritus and brown howler Alouatta fusca (E). The muriqui Brachyteles arachnoides certainly occurred in the reserve at one time, and this may be one of its last remaining strongholds. A number of noteworthy birds are found here, such as the black-fronted piping guan Aburria jacutinga.

Management Constraints This reserve has few problems compared with others of its size. Some poaching and illegal extraction of palmito palm occur. The number of guards is insufficient to the size of the reserve.
