Birds To Watch 2

This publication is part of BirdLife's long-term programme to complete a Red Data Book (RDB) for all globally threatened birds.

Birds to Watch In Context
This section describes the role of Birds to Watch 2 in the global RDB programme and describes how the book was compiled.

The New IUCN Criteria
Birds to Watch 2 was completed while these new criteria were being finalised. The criteria followed in the book are described in detail (note that these differ slightly from the final version published in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Anmimals), with discussion of the difficulties which were encountered while applying them.

Trends And Factors In The Global Endangerment Of Birds
An overview of the 1,111 bird species identified as globally threatened, including a prediction of future extinctions, an analysis of the most important countries, habitats and threats, and a summary of the main conclusions of the book.

Species Accounts
The assessment of each species is accompanied by a short account, which is intended to reveal four key items: distribution, at least by country; population status or trend; habitat(s); and threat(s). This text, together with other information, is presented here in a searchable database.
