Conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants in Ghana 1999-2002

Aims:

  • Assist Ghana to meet the requirements of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • Provide the base-line information needed by the government and people of Ghana and multilateral agencies to support sustainable use of the country's genetic resources.

  • Relieve the pressure from the over-harvesting of medicinal plants from the wild.

  • Raise awareness of biodiversity conservation.

 

Objectives:

  • Document the utilisation of medicinal plant species in Ghana.

  • Identify species that require immediate and long-term action to protect them from over-exploitation.

  • Train staff to operate a plant records management system.

  • Provide a working example of a medicinal plant garden.

  • Promote home gardens for the cultivation of medicinal plants.

  • Train local communities to propagate and cultivate species they have traditionally collected from the wild.
