Caesalpinia paraguariensis

Argentina (Catamarca, Chaco, Cordoba, Corrientes, Formosa, Jujuy,
La Rioja, Mato Grosso, Mendoza, Misiones, Salta, San Juan,
San Luis, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Tucuman), Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay
Habitat A
species of lowland, seasonal, broadleaved, dry forest and woodland. In Bolivia
the species occurs in dry chaqueño forest and interAndean
zones (Killen et al.,
1993). Population Status and Trends
The species is largely confined to the Chaco region, where
it occurs widely and relatively commonly (Prado, 1996). It is at the margins
of its distribution in Brazil, occurring only in Porto Murtinho (Americas Regional
Workshop, 1996). In Bolivia the species is well represented
in herbarium collections. Some areas may suffer overexploitation but habitat loss
is a greater threat (Killeen, 1997). Role
of species in the Ecosystem Threats
Overexploitation, logging of the habitat, habitat conversion
to agriculture and pastoralism/ranching (Prado, 1996). Utilisation
The timber is exploited at a domestic level. It provides a
durable, weather-resistant wood, which is used in construction work. The
species is also useful as a source of fuelwood. The seeds yield a dye and the
bark contains medicinal extracts (Killeen et al.,
1993).
