Contribution to an evaluation of tree species using the new CITES Listing Criteria 256 Acacia crassicarpa  Leguminosae red wattle Distribution Australia (Queensland), Papua New Guinea Habitat A species of tropical, lowland, dry, broadleaved, forest and woodland types, including savannah woodland, monsoon forest and gallery-type forest. Associated species include Acacia aulaeocarpa, Melaleuca spp., Lophostemon suaveolens and Tristancopsis ferruginea. Population status and trends In Papua New Guinea, this species is confined to dry and seasonal monsoon forests of the Western Province. Populations occur in logging areas and the timber is actively sought after (Eddowes, 1997) Role of species in the ecosystem No information. Threats Overexploitation, habitat destruction, fire. Utilisation The wood is used for joinery, furniture, cabinet-work, veneer and flooring. The timber has an attractive form and red hue. Trade The timber is traded on a minor international scale. IUCN Conservation category VU A1cd+2cd, B1+2abcd according to Eddowes (1997). Conservation measures There are probably one or two specimens planted in LAE National Botanic Gardens, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. CSIRO (Australia) have made extensive seed collections of a range of Acacia spp. from Papua New Guinea. Forest management and silviculture Plantations have been established in Indonesia.
