The BIP chosen as one of the “20 Best’ UNEP/GEF projects of the last 20 years!

To celebrate 20 years of the Global Environmental Facility in 2011, which also coincides with the 40th Anniversary of UNEP in 2012, UNEP will showcase the ’20 Best’ UNEP/GEF projects of the last 20 years. The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) Project, for which UNEP-WCMC was the executing agency, has been selected as one of the 20 projects due to its achievements in fostering a coordinated international partnership that provided data, analysis and expertise needed to assess the state of biodiversity worldwide. This is a great accolade for the Partnership and UNEP-WCMC, which features alongside other high profile initiates and projects such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.

To mark the selection the BIP will be showcased on the UNEP website in the week beginning the 7th May 2012, with a member of the BIP Secretariat becoming UNEP’s expert for the day during the week.

The Biodiversity Indicator Partnership was established in 2007 with funding from the GEF. Despite the GEF funds coming to an end in 2011 the Partnership continues to provide ongoing support to the CBD in monitoring progress towards the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the underlying Aichi Targets. This support was recently detailed in an Information Document produced by Partners and submitted to support CBD discussions at SBSTTA 16 and WGRI 4.
