UNEP-WCMC, in association with the IUCN Species Survival Commission and a network of experts, identified
over 8000 tree species which are threatened with extinction at a global
level. This survey, supported by the Government of the Netherlands as
part of the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Trees project,
is the first of its kind to assess the conservation status of tree species
worldwide. Information on individual species is recorded in the Tree
Conservation Database and includes IUCN red list category, information
on distribution, uses, ecology, threats and conservation measures. Summary
information on individual species is published in The World List of
Threatened Trees.
UNEP-WCMC and Fauna and Flora International have recently joined together to form the
Global Trees Campaign.
By using the information resources available in the Trees Conservation
Database and through collaboration with experts and organisations around
the world, the Global Trees Campaign will act to save the world's most
threatened trees.
