Summary of
the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Trees project regional
workshops
Three regional
workshops were convened by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)
as part of the joint UNEP-WCMC and IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) project
entitled the Conservation and sustainable management of trees, funded
by the Government of the Netherlands. The three workshops were held at the
following venues:
- The Jameson
Hotel, Harare, Zimbabwe. 9-11 July, 1996
- Centro
Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza
(CATIE), Turrialba, Costa Rica. 18-20 November, 1996
- The Army
Hotel, Hanoi, Viet Nam. 18-21 August, 1997
The general objectives of the workshops were:
- to review
existing information on the conservation of tree species and to collect
additional information on species of conservation concern;
- to advise
on the development of a Tree Conservation Information Service appropriate
for national, regional and international needs;
- to plan
for the establishment, or to discuss the activities of, regional SSC tree
specialist groups
Introductions
to the Conservation and sustainable management of trees project,
the Tree Conservation Information Service, and The IUCN Red List
categories and guidelines were made by project staff.
Many presentations
were made by participants which gave detailed accounts of the conservation
programmes and projects for threatened tree species within each region and
the experiences of participants in applying species threat categories.
Working groups
were convened to discuss the conservation status of widespread tree species
of resource importance on a regional basis and the application of the new
IUCN categories and criteria.
The workshops
were very productive with many positive ideas emerging towards the conservation
of tree species. Participants were thanked for their contributions to the
workshops and the support received for the Conservation and sustainable
management of trees project
