Distribution
Belize, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Chiapas, Oaxaca), Nicaragua, Panama
Habitat
Tropical,
montane, dry, moist, seasonal, mixed, closed forest, open forest, occurring
from 550 to 2700m. Although the exact limits of its range are imperfectly
known, the species is found in upland valleys and plateaux, often growing
on deep rich fertile soil, sometimes forming pure stands.
Population
Status and Trends
A tree increasingly
exploited for its quality timber. Populations are restricted in range within
each country and the areas where they occur are frequently cleared and replaced
by secondary shrubland with Pinus oocarpa.
Ecology
Associated
species include P. ayachahuite, P. oocarpa, P. maximinoi, P. pseudostrobus
and Liquidambar styraciflua.

Utilisation
The timber
is highly valued for use in construction work.
Trade
The species
is reported in international trade, being exported from Honduras 1994 in
the form of veneer, sawnwood and logs (ITTO, 1997).

Plantations
have been established but no conservation measures are in place.
