The United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in which they agree a framework for future collaboration in support of the implementation of the Convention.

Signed on 17 May 2012 in London by the Director of UNEP-WCMC, Mr. Jon Hutton and the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, Mr. Luc Gnacagja, the MoC underscores the commitment of both organizations to sustainable development of the drylands.

UNEP-WCMC has substantively supported UNCCD in recent years through executing the Performance Review and Assessment of Implementation System (PRAIS). The MoC aims to build on this established relationship and mobilise UNEP-WCMC’s technical and capacity-building expertise.

Over the next five years, the MoC covers areas of cooperation which include capacity building related to monitoring, assessment indicators and reporting, as well as issues at the science-policy interface. It aims to support implementation of the Convention and the 10-year Strategy, and contribute to the function of ecosystems, sustainable management of biodiversity and improved resilience of vulnerable livelihoods.
