Submitting management effectiveness reports and / or data
If you have any further information about PA management effectiveness tools or assessment being undertaken in your country and/or region, we would kindly appreciate if you could share this information with us. Your contribution will enable us have a comprehensive picture on the existing efforts to assess and improve the effectiveness of protected areas management in your country, region and in the world.
We also hope that the information will assist countries to meet their goals of completing an assessment of management effectiveness in 30% of their protected areas – as agreed in the Programme of Work on Protected Areas under the CBD.
What will be done with the information supplied?
- The information you provide will be checked to ensure its accuracy and relevance; once passing these checks, it will be included in the PAME database hosted and managed by UNEP-WCMC.
- If you are submitting a report on an assessment, we also interested to read your report and the lessons learned from the evaluations, both in terms of how the evaluation methodologies work, their strengths and weaknesses, and also patterns seen in park management, such as emergence of new threats or correlation of successful management with certain factors.
- UNEP-WCMC, the University of Queensland and other partners are working together on the development of a ‘management effectiveness index’, which would provide a very brief summary of effectiveness in different dimensions of protected area management. This could be used by countries for their reporting requirements to the CBD. To view more information on this project please click here.
How will confidential information be treated?
Many individuals and/or organisations are happy for the results of their evaluations to be publicly available, and this enables the wider conservation community to analyse trends and to understand more about parks status and management. As part of their commitment to the CBD Program of Work for Protected Areas, many park agencies are moving towards more public reporting of park management. In all the work of the WCPA, we emphasise the use of management effectiveness evaluation as a positive factor in discussing PA needs and helping progress, rather than the negative use to compare performance or ‘punish’ parks or systems with lower ratings.
However, we understand some agencies are concerned about possible disclosure of data from individual parks and any restriction for the use of the data given will be respected. When submitting information please fill the data provider form and state if there are any restrictions on the use of the data you are providing.
