Since arriving at UNEP-WCMC as an intern, Edward has progressed through several positions, all of which having a strong reliance on GIS methodologies. Edward uses these GIS skills daily by helping the collation, management and analysis of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). Recently, Edward has also been a focal point in the Protected Areas Programme for systematic conservation planning, an approach to create effective networks of Protected Areas at the minimum possible cost.
Edward’s early career experience was predominantly as a field ecologist in the woodlands of central Scotland. After graduating from Edinburgh University in 2014 with a degree in ecology and forestry he came to UNEP-WCMC to intern in the Protected Areas Programme.
Working in collaboration with the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Edward is leading a team to help delineate the priority areas for conservation on these South Atlantic islands.
Edward coordinated a team at the Centre to aid the Rainforest Trust in deciding what parts of north-western Colombia would benefit the most from biodiversity conservation.
Edward, in collaboration with the Luc Hoffman Institute, is undertaking groundbreaking research into how the world's conservation estate has evolved over recent years.
