Judith Walcott

Senior Technical Officer | Climate Change and Biodiversity

Judith's work at the Centre focuses on supporting governments and other technical partners in Latin America in a variety of REDD+ readiness activities, including in the use of spatial information to inform REDD+ strategy development and implementation. Judith also supports national, regional and global level UN-REDD work on safeguards. She was the technical lead for the development of the safeguards module for the REDD+ Academy, and facilitated safeguards sessions at the first regional REDD+ Academies in the Asia Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean regions.

Previous experience & expertise

Before joining the Centre, Judith completed her PhD in Geography at the University of Cambridge. Her dissertation focused on development interventions in Ecuador's northern Andean border region. Judith also holds an MSc in Anthropology and Development from the London School of Economics and a BA in International Relations from Tufts University. She has worked with educational institutions and non-governmental organizations in the United States, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom on topics including: biodiversity and indigenous cultural survival; sustainable development; and migration and displacement.

UN-REDD National Programme for Paraguay | Project Leader

Judith leads the Centre’s UN-REDD Programme country work in Paraguay. She has facilitated workshops on multiple benefits of REDD+ and safeguards in Paraguay, and has collaborated with national counterparts to produce technical papers on using spatial information to support REDD+ planning.


REDD+ Policy Analysis Center Peru | Project Contributor

Judith collaborated on the Centre’s work in Peru on the German-funded REDD+ Policy Analysis Center project, which aims to develop integrated land-use modeling at global and regional scales to support the design of national and regional REDD+ policies that safeguard and enhance other ecosystem values and helps to meet the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
