Rike Bolam

Post-doctoral researcher | Science

Rike is working on the Designing a brighter future for humanity and biodiversity project. She will investigate what future pathways for biodiversity would look like on a national scale and whether there are government commitments to realise the pathways. She will also examine whether the commitments would add up to reversing the loss of biodiversity and what else would be needed to achieve this.

Previous experience & expertise

Rike finished her PhD at Newcastle University, UK, in 2018. She modelled extinction risk of plants using Machine Learning models. She then went on to do a post-doc at Newcastle where she worked in collaboration with the IUCN Species Survival Commission to provide scientific inputs into the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. As part of this work, she led a collaboration estimating which bird and mammal extinctions were prevented through conservation action since the Aichi targets came into force. Rike is also a co-organiser of R-Ladies Newcastle and is keen to increase skills and diversity in the coding community.
