This webinar series will provide information on the modernisation of the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA) and the Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME), and will discuss why these updates matter for reporting on Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Webinars will be presented in four different time zones, to allow participants from all over the world to attend.
The World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA) provides the headline indicator for Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This database brings together national data to create a global picture of the world’s protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). Recently the WDPCA was revamped to modernise its data management processes, and several fields were added or updated to improve the quality, consistency, and usefulness of submitted data. This webinar will provide an overview of the updated WDPCA structure, with a particular focus on its new fields.
Participants will learn how these updates strengthen data quality, support national and global reporting processes, and improve the recognition of area-based conservation efforts across the world. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about the reporting process and what support UNEP-WCMC can offer to data providers.
Effective management of protected and conserved areas is central to achieving successful conservation outcomes and delivering on global biodiversity targets. The Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME) collates data on the effectiveness of protected and conserved areas generated by a wide variety of assessment tools and approaches. The data are compiled in collaboration with a wide range of governmental and non-governmental organizations. The GD-PAME was recently expanded to enhance its role in tracking global progress towards Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework alongside the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas. This webinar will introduce the updated GD-PAME structure, including revised and newly introduced data fields.
Participants will gain an understanding of how data are collected, standardised, and used to inform global stocktakes of progress towards Target 3. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about the reporting process and what support UNEP-WCMC can offer to data providers.
