We maintain and develop Protected Planet: the global platform for knowledge and data on the status and trends of protected and conserved areas, as a collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

We monitor progress towards global targets by providing policymakers with insights and analysis on area, condition and trends. We also build capacity for improved conservation planning to inform decision-making and improve conservation outcomes on land, in inland waters and in the ocean.

Protected Planet provides the basis for accountability by delivering the official indicators on progress towards various international biodiversity targets, including under the Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity.  

Where information is lacking, Protected Planet builds the capacity of stakeholders at all levels to fill critical knowledge gaps. To support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Protected Planet has evolved to streamline the reporting process, expand options for data analysis, and provide added transparency around the impact of protected and conserved areas. Alongside information on coverage we are working to further incorporate knowledge on the quality of protected and conserved areas in Protected Planet.
